Much of the woodwork and the restored cornice are from the original construction. Neirnsee and Neilson, the architects who enlarged Clifton for Johns Hopkins in 1852, retained much of the earlier house wherever possible. The extraordinary decoration of this room, seen today, was completed in 1852 for Johns Hopkins. the ceiling decoration suggests dining under an outdoor arbor, and the walls show expert examples of painted graining, with center panels emulating boards of yellow pine, which was a common building material and thus rarely seen in painted graining. This room was used by Johns Hopkins to entertain many important guests, such as the future King Edward VII of England, on his tour of America.
